GARDEN INSTALLATION

Because of the specialized nature of Studio Humelim’s designs, we prefer to handle the installation of our designs ourselves.

Our gardens often include plants that are uncommon in the nursery trade and planting compositions that depend on careful placement. Installing them successfully requires both horticultural knowledge and a close familiarity with the design itself.

And contrary to popular belief, planting is not simply digging holes! To be done well, it requires a deep understanding of how soil functions and what plants need during the delicate transplantation process. The way a plant goes into the ground can determine how well it establishes for years to come.

Studio Humelim’s planting team brings decades of combined experience in horticulture and ecology. That background allows us to install gardens thoughtfully and carefully, ensuring that the design translates from paper into a healthy, thriving landscape.

garden aftercare

Despite what you may hear online, there is no such thing as a completely “no-maintenance” landscape. Gardens are human spaces—we design them to fit our needs and desires, and if we want to maintain our vision, we must keep up an active role in its maintenance.

That said, a garden can absolutely function with minimal external inputs. Well-designed landscapes should require little to no chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or supplemental irrigation. Native plants are key to this approach: they are adapted to our regional soils, climate, and ecological relationships, which allows them to thrive with far less intervention than many non-native species.
Studio Humelim recommends bi-monthly maintenance visits during the first two years after installation. Gardens become more resilient and largely self-sustaining over time, but they need regular care while they establish. Consistent attention during this early period helps ensure long-term health, stability, and beauty.
